Indy Resource Connect

To expand homeless prevention efforts to at-risk families and individuals, CHIP developed a new service model called Indy Resource Connect (IRC). IRC is based on the successful Indy Homeless Connect model but differs in its focus on preventative services for those who are not yet homeless. A series of day-long events were held in Marion County in 2009 and 2010. The first two events took place on November 10, 2009 in Pike Township and June 3, 2010 in Wayne Township. The third event occurred September 25 at Washington Square Mall in Warren Township.
Each IRC event provided free, co-located services such as: applications for public benefits; financial education and credit counseling; legal services; accessing birth certificates and other forms of identification; services specific to veterans; and career building skills. Many of the Township Trustee Offices and Community Centers were present. Free childcare was available during the events, and event locations were conveniently located on bus lines and had ample free parking.
IRC did not just inform people about services, but volunteers and professionals were on site to provide counseling, accept applications, make referrals, provide identification, and provide basic healthcare and other comprehensive services. IRC also presents a unique opportunity for collaboration building among service organizations, public agencies, and other community groups as they work together to plan and execute these events.
