It started when someone who was homeless was staying at our church. When she was ready to live in her own place, she didn’t have the basic household items we all take for granted. So I gave her my spare linens and extras. That’s when I realized she wasn’t the only one in need, and no organization was addressing that need.
I can’t tell you the times that I have walked into a small apartment carrying sheets, towels, utensils and a lamp and literally have seen a mattress on the floor, nothing else. Families living in shelters who are preparing to move into their own place lack basic household items. I founded Second Starts to help them establish a home.
So many people have come forward to donate items, to volunteer to sort and organize; a congregation has provided space for Second Starts and the items that we distribute. My thanks to all of them!
