Winter Contingency

The Winter Contingency Plan has been developed to provide relief to people experiencing homelessness in Indianapolis and Central Indiana when inclement weather occurs. This plan is intended to serve as a guide to prevent people experiencing homelessness from experiencing serious harm or death during the winter season.

Heat Advisory

The Office of Public Health and Safety (OPHS) has connected with the Indy Parks team to ensure all available locations are open and accessible during the current heat advisory to help residents stay cool and safe.

The City of Indianapolis issued a heat safety press release yesterday advising residents to take precautions as heat index values are expected to reach dangerous levels over the next several days. We encourage you to share the following resources with anyone who may need relief from the heat:

Heat Safety Reminders

Please encourage residents to:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may be vulnerable.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and call 911 in emergencies.

As recovery efforts continue in flood-impacted areas, we also encourage volunteers, residents, and contractors working outdoors to take frequent breaks, seek shade or air conditioning when possible, and remain well hydrated.

The City’s full press release is attached below. Thank you for helping us share these important resources and keep our community safe during this period of extreme heat.
